2012 Anniversary Ale

We liked our 2009 Anniversary Ale so much that we’ve made it every year since. It is a high-gravity wheat wine made with blood oranges that render an alluring purple hue. Flavors abound, ranging from the spiciness of green peppercorns to the tang of blood orange zest. Aggressive dry hop additions amplify the citrus overtones and spiciness found throughout. ‘Anni’ Ale typifies Short’s Brewing Company by embodying all the complexities that come along with another year of brewing.

Estimated ABV: 9.6%
Estimated IBUs: 76
Hops: Simcoe

The Curl

Originally released at the Anniversary Party in 2006, The Curl is an Imperial American Pilsner. It is light bodied with a clear, bright, golden color. Back in ’06, Short’s was just getting off the ground as a fledgling brewpub and Joe was the pub brewer. Although we hadn’t settled on any flagships yet, Huma Lupa Licious, Bellaire Brown, the Village Reserve, and Pontius Road Pilsner poured from our taps more often than not. One of the first pub tenders, Jeremy VanSise (nicknamed “Jerry Curl”), pitched the idea of an Imperial Pilsner. Joe fit it into the brew schedule and decided to bottle condition it in 750 mL bottles. Hand filled and labeled (with each bottle given informational hang tags), this beer was the first bottled product from Short’s Brewing Company. This is the description that Joe printed on each of the 2006 hang tags:

The Curl: Aside from it’s interesting name, this imperial pilsner is ridiculously awesome. Flaked maze and pilsen malt are the nucleus of “The Curl,” resulting in a beautiful golden hue. The wort is unbalanced with a heavy dosing of Amarillo hops, which are not typically used in pilsner. Our house American lager yeast carried out the fermentation of this kick ass brew, producing a clean delicious flavor profile.

Estimated ABV: 7%

More Bottled Brews On the Horizon

In June, we’ll switch our seasonal flagship from ControversiALE to Nicie Spicie, our refreshing Summer Wheat beer. We’re also looking forward to the premier bottle/keg release of Kolsch 45, which many of you will remember as one of our 2011 summer experimental beers. We’ve also been keeping an eye on the spruce trees to monitor their progress for the 2012 batch of India Spruce Pilsner (estimated early July, depending on mother nature). Like last year, we’ll also release Strawberry Short’s Cake (early July) and Beach Wheat (late July). As beach chair weather arrives, it is also worth mentioning that Soft Parade is tasting better than it ever has, thanks to continued process improvements in Elk Rapids. It is one of the most complex beers that we produce, and to make it on a production level year round is a massive undertaking (special thanks to Curt Guntzviller and Aaron Smith, our Elk Rapids production brewers).

P.S. – If any of you missed Joe’s “State of the Brewery Address” at the 2012 Anniversary Party, Joe said the state of our brewery is “Fantastic!” So cheers to you, Short’s Brew Supporters! It’s been another amazing year and we thank you for that.

- Matt Drake, Short’s Brewing Company Operations Manager

Do you love the food service industry? Are you excited about working in a fast-paced, team environment? Short’s is seeking energetic team members for its gourmet deli in Bellaire. As a deli team member, you will be responsible for prep work, building sandwiches, making pizzas, and learning how to make the other delicious food items that we serve. To be qualified for this position, you must be able to regularly lift 50 pounds. You must also be able to squat, twist, bend, climb a flight of stairs repeatedly, and work on your feet for up to 10 hours at a time. In addition, you must be able to do basic math, follow recipes, comply with oral and written instructions, use standard measurement systems, effectively and safely use kitchen utensils, be able to work in hot and cold environments, and have sufficient dexterity for working in a crowded workspace with various coworkers. If you are interested, please email a resume and cover letter to employment (at) shortsbrewing.com. Previous food service or related experience is preferred, but not required.

With a week to go before the 2012 Short’s to Short’s Paddle, we are especially excited for this year’s event. As indicated in our previous post, we’re making a lot of upgrades this year. For example, ISLAND will be selling breakfast burritos and coffee at the launch site and we’ll have lots of porta-poddies located throughout the course. Plus, now that Moosejaw is sponsoring the event, the first 300 paddlers to attend our post-paddle party are going to get free one-of-a-kind Moosejaw/Short’s to Short’s t-shirts. Paddlers will also receive a complimentary beer glass from Land and Sea Packaging. The post-paddle party at our Elk Rapids production brewery will run from 4-9 on Friday night and will be a great lead-in to the Anniversary Party and Aww Jeah release the next day. Even non-paddlers are welcome at the party, and we’ll be premiering MMMkay, the lagered final runnings of Aww Jeah, on tap for the first time.

Every year, about a week before the Short’s to Short’s Paddle, a small group of SBC employees embark on an “unofficial” version of the event that we call the Pre-Paddle. We do this to check the conditions, test our gear, and gather insight for the year’s “official” event. This year, we created a complete video recap of the Pre-Paddle to help paddlers prepare for the Short’s to Short’s. The day we selected was cold and windy to start, but turned pleasant and sunny by the end of the day. It just goes to show, you always need to pack a lot of clothing and gear for whatever the weather presents.

Transportation is being provided separately for this event by Green Planet Extreme Adventure Tours. They are offering a wide range of transportation options, including rides from Elk Rapids to Bellaire before the event, rides from Elk Rapids to Bellaire after the event, and pick-ups at drop out points during the event. Please contact Green Planet for information and to pre-book your transportation.

Finally, if you have any last minute questions about the Short’s to Short’s Paddle, please email matt@shortsbrewing.com. And remember, if you are coming to the Paddle, you are going to want to stick around for the Anniversary Party on Saturday.

See you next weekend!

- Short’s Event Staff

We’re celebrating Short’s 8th Anniversary on Saturday, April 28th! The party kicks off at 3 p.m., but we’ll start selling Aww Jeah! (Double Huma) at 1 p.m. At this time, we have not set a case limit for Aww Jeah, although we may implement a limit (2 or 3 cases), in order to make sure that most people who want it are able to get some.

Unbelievable Beer List
We’re featuring 20 draft beers, 2 firkin beers (Anniversary Ale and Aww Jeah), and several other products in bottles. The complete list is on the promotional poster here, but draft highlights include: Mmmkay (an insanely delicious hoppy lager made with the final runnings of AwwJeah), Whiskey Happy Jack, ’09 Liberator, Batch 666 Wizard, Bourbon Aphasia, Bourbon Stellar Ale, and 2009 Mystery Stout. Other draft beers include Adia’s Ale, Freedom of ’78, Sustenance, Cinnamon Dopplebock, Goodnight Bodacious, Nitro ESB, Autumn Ale, Magician, and Locals Light. We’re also releasing a unique batch of Huma Lupa Licious in bottles that we’re calling Huma X. It is a bottle conditioned Huma Lupa Licious that we made while conducting testing for Aww Jeah!

Musical Guests
As always, we’ve booked a solid lineup of artists. This year, we’re introducing first time Anniversary Party musicians the Adam LeBeaux Band and the Moxie Strings (f/k/a String Cheese). As is our tradition, we’ve asked Reggie and the After Party to get their band back together to close down our Anniversary Party with an extended set of funk, rock, rhythm, and blues.

State of the Brewery
As so much good stuff has happened over the past year, we’re very curious to hear what Joe is going to say during his Annual State of the Brewery Address. We’re also wondering which son or sons will be joining him onstage? The State of the Brewery Address will be at 7:30 p.m.

We hold the Short’s to Short’s Paddle on the Friday before the Anniversary Party. The complete weekend schedule of events is as follows:

More than 150 people have already registered for the 2012 Short’s to Short’s Paddle! By way of comparison, 128 people participated last year. We anticipate that as many as 300 paddlers may attend this year’s event.

What is the Short’s to Short’s Paddle?
The Short’s to Short’s Paddle is a free event spanning Antrim County’s lower Chain of Lakes from Bellaire to Elk Rapids. Together, the Intermediate River, Lake Bellaire, Grass River, Clam Lake, Torch Lake, Torch River, Lake Skegemog, Elk Lake, and the Elk River make up the 27 mile course route. Short’s Brewing Company started this event as a way to celebrate the many miles of beautiful, crystal clear water that stretch from our Bellaire Brewpub to our Elk Rapids Production Brewery. The event takes place annually on the day before our Anniversary Party.

What Of Kind of Boat Should I Use?
We use sea kayaks with spray skirts. This type of kayak allows you to cruise at a decent speed all day, and provides the best stability in open water stretches. Spray skirts keep your boat from swamping in waves. A number of participants choose to use river kayaks and participate in the first half of the event, finishing at the Dockside. This is a great way to participate even if you are a beginner or do not have a sea kayak. Canoes and rowboats have also been used. Last year, a tenacious brother-sister duo rowed a wooden boat all the way to Elk Rapids.

Friday April 27th Schedule of Events
This year, we are introducing a food vendor, a whole bunch of porta-poddies, and many other conveniences to make post-launch festivities more fun and convenient. It will be worth it to arrive early!
6:00 – 7:15 a.m. – Registration & breakfast by ISLAND
7:30 a.m. – Photo shoot & pre-launch report by Joe Short
7:30 a.m. – 8:30 a.m. – Launch
8:30 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. – Paddle to Elk Rapids
4:00 – 9:00 p.m. – Post-Paddle Party at Short’s Elk Rapids Production Brewery

Launch Site
The launch site for this event is the public access site on the Intermediate River, behind Fischer Insurance in Bellaire (Ohio Street on Google Maps). Unlike in previous years, there will be no parking on the grass at the public access site. Instead, we will use that area for the registration and food tent. The access road to the launch site will be used only for dropping off kayaks and gear. Vehicles will then be directed to the adjacent public parking lot behind the Bellaire Bar or other nearby public parking.

Breakfast
The Institute for Sustainable Living, Art, and Natural Design (ISLAND) will serving breakfast burritos at the launch site. These delicious burritos will be made with delicious local ingredients, including local sausage and eggs, plus homemade salsa from Short’s. Burritos will sell for $5 each and proceeds will support ISLAND.

Paddle Route and Tracking
The course route is the same this year. However, you will be required to check-in with us at the Dockside, Alden, the Torch River Bridge, Elk Lake Girls Camp, and in Elk Rapids. If you drop out before reaching a designated checkpoint, we will ask you to contact a course official to let us know you are done for the day, and that you are safely on dry ground. Failing to check in will disqualify you from receiving a free beer glass and t-shirt at the post-paddle party in Elk Rapids. Note: you will not need to exit your boat at checkpoints. All kayaks will be clearly numbered to aid us in tracking each participant.

Safety Boats
For 2012, we are hoping to more than double the number of safety boats. In addition, you will be directed to stay on one side of the lineup of safety boats. This will allow the safety boat crews to better monitor the paddlers. If you are interested in being a safety boat caption, or know someone who is suitably nautical, please click here.

Bad Weather Plan
As much as we hate to think about it, bad weather could disrupt the Short’s to Short’s Paddle. If strong winds make Torch Lake too dangerous, the event will be cancelled at the Dockside.

Course Timing
Paddlers should expect the full route to take from 8-10 hours, taking breaks into account. While we feel that this time is reasonable for any able paddler, you must work to stay on track. If your goal for the day is to relax and socialize, you should not try to go the entire distance. We encourage any level of participation in the event, and there is nothing wrong with planning to drop out at a checkpoint.
This is NOT a race. There are no prizes for finishing first. However, some expert paddlers have found it interesting to time themselves. Currently, the known course record belongs to Denny Paull, an avid paddler and kayak racer, who completed the 2011 event in 4 hours and 45 minutes. Denny stopped at each of the drop out points noted on the S2S map.

Essential Tips
Dress for the weather. We suggest moisture wicking layers underneath a gore-tex fleece or windbreaker. Fighting wet and cold is essential to really enjoy this adventure. Dress appropriately so you can be comfortable and have a good experience. Also, be sure to stow a complete set of back up clothing in a dry bag. Bring lots of clothing options because the springtime weather in Northern Michigan often defies prediction.
Wear sunscreen and a hat. Apply sunscreen throughout the day.
Test your kayak beforehand. Make cockpit adjustments before launch day. Sit in your vessel and decide where the most comfortable position is going to be for your ride. Being comfortable will really improve your enjoyment! Also, be sure that your kayak is water-tight. Check every compartment cover to make sure that it is fastened.
Wear a life jacket. Better safe than sorry! At this time of year, falling into the water will cause your body to very quickly become hypothermic. You will be disoriented and will not have much energy. Your life vest will keep you afloat until help can arrive.
Keep electronics dry. While it is a good idea to bring a cell phone, be sure to pack it in a dry bag.
Bring water and snacks. It’s a long day and you’re going to be burning thousands of calories. Plus, you need to stay hydrated!
Paddle with a Partner. Either come with a buddy, or get to know someone on the water. Either way, it is not safe to paddle alone. Also, be sure to tell someone where you are going and what you are doing.

Dining En Route
If you want to stop and grab a bite to eat along the way, we suggest either the Dockside or Fabianos (or both). The Dockside has great food and, on the day of the Paddle, Short’s Brew will pour from all of their taps. Further on, at the mouth of the Torch River, Fabiano’s serves great pizzas and subs.

As Always, Drink Responsibly
Of course we enjoy a good beer! However, because the Short’s to Short’s is an endurance event, and because the waterways at issue require you to be at your best, we advise that any consumption of alcohol during the event be extremely moderate.

Post-Paddle Party in Elk Rapids
For the first time ever, we are throwing a party on the same day as the Short’s to Short’s. We’re calling it a mini-Short’s Fest. We’ll have 10 beers on tap, multiple food vendors, a tent, brewery tours, and more. The event runs from 4 pm – 9 pm and will be open to the public.

Free 2012 S2S Beer Glass and Commemorative Moosejaw T-Shirt!
At the Post-Paddle Party, qualifying Short’s to Short’s Paddlers will receive a complimentary beer glass from Land and Sea Packaging. In addition, the first 300 qualifying paddlers to attend the reception will receive a complimentary event t-shirt from Moosejaw. Representatives from Moosejaw will also be on hand to give out some great prizes!

Transportation and Kayak Rentals
Plan to team up with another paddler or a friend to arrange transportation. Alternately, Green Planet Extreme Adventure Tours is also providing transportation and ground support services for the Short’s to Short’s paddlers. Green Planet operates independently of our event, but has been extremely helpful to our paddlers in years past. You can sign up for transportation and/or kayak rentals through Green Planet’s website.

Finally, if you have any questions, please send them to matt@shortsbrewing.com. And remember, if you are coming to the Paddle, plan to stick around for our 8th Anniversary Party at our Pub in Bellaire on Saturday the 28th from 3 p.m. to close. We’ll be releasing the first ever Double Huma and we’ll have a great lineup of beer and music throughout the day.

- SBC Paddle Crew

Spring is a great time to enjoy Short’s Brew! ControversiALE will remain on store shelves all season long, plus we have some awesome new specialty releases hitting store shelves as well. Over the next couple of weeks, we are launching two special IPAs that you won’t want to miss. If you happen to be in Bellaire, you should also be sure to pick up a 6-pack of Bourbon Barrel Soaked Sustenance.

Prolonged Enjoyment

This is the first bottle release of Prolonged Enjoyment, a session IPA. Many of you will remember this beer, which first poured from the taps at our pub last summer. After the 2011 Summer Beer Festival, we received numerous emails and Facebook messages asking us to bottle this beer. And we listened!

If you’ve never had it, the first thing that you will notice are the aromas pouring off of this beer, which simulate handfuls of fresh green hops held to your nose. Fragrances of green grass, pine, and citrus fruit will intoxicate your senses. Slight malty flavors are met with citrusy American hop characteristics that pave the way for a surprising punch of pleasant bitterness. Bitter qualities linger briefly before a mild, dry finish complemented by accents of pine and pure refreshment.

Prolonged Enjoyment was created as a research and development beer by our Head Brewer, Tony Hansen. By using 5 malt varieties and 4 different kinds of hops, Tony was able to accomplish all the impacting characteristics of an IPA (aroma, flavor, and bitterness), while keeping the ABV to an astounding low 3.5%. Tony felt that this beer was classifiable as a Session Pale Ale, but the IBU content is closer to an IPA. Therefore, it has been labeled as a Session IPA.

Freedom of ’78 Pure Guava IPA

We’re also bringing back Freedom of ’78 Pure Guava IPA, which was developed in collaboration with Half Acre Brewing Company (Chicago, IL). It was originally released in 12 oz. bottles throughout Michigan in the summer of 2010. Since then, we have received numerous email and Facebook requests to bring it back. Fortunately for fans, this year’s release will be much bigger than the 2010 release, theoretically meaning that it should be more widely available.

The name Freedom of ’78, Pure Guava IPA is a reference to the band Ween. On the album Chocolate and Cheese, there is a song called Freedom of ’76. The brewers changed the year to ’78 in reference the year that they were all born. Pure Guava is the name of another Ween album, and since both Short’s and Half Acre share an affinity for hops, they thought that making an IPA with lots of hops and guava would be awesome. Therefore, this beer is made with real pink guava puree (referred to as “ectoplasm” by the brewers). About two ounces of guava are in every pint of Freedom of ’78.

We describe Freedom of ’78 as a medium bodied IPA with bright clarity and a pleasing bronze hue. The aroma is a unique fusion of citrus fruit combined with subtle pine qualities. The distinct characteristics of the guava nectar are impossible to miss as the sweetness and slightly tart flavors snap across the palate. Comparable attributes of tangerine, nectarine, and even some faint honey flavors are detectable. The finish provides a pleasing bitterness that resonates and turns dry.

Bourbon Barrel Aged
Sustenance

Bourbon-barrel aged beer fans will delight in our first bourbon barrel release of 2012: Bourbon Barrel Soaked Sustenance Black Beer. Bourbon Susty (as we lovingly call it) is our spring Schwarzbier (black lager) aged in bourbon barrels for 10 months. Bourbon Susty features rich roasted malt qualities with bold flavors of vanilla, charred oak, and even a slight nuttiness. The light, crisp finish makes this bourbon soaked beer surprisingly light (in flavor, not color) and sessionable. We love that Boubon Susty is light enough to highlight (not mask) the complexities of the bourbon aging process. The light body also makes it ideal for springtime refreshment.

The first batch of Sustenance was brewed by Joe Short in 2007. A bourbon barrel aged version was first released at our 2009 Anniversary Party in 22 oz. bottles. Since then, we have released Bourbon Susty each year in 12 oz. bottles (pub only). Last year, we released non-bourbon barrel aged Sustenance Black Beer for statewide bottle release. For 2012, we decided to age the entire batch (115 cases) in bourbon barrels and make it a pub-only release. Thus, while Aww Jeah and Anniversary Ale will take much of the spotlight during the Anniversary Party, Bourbon Sustenance will be another beer worth taking home. And, unlike those other limited-release beers, it is available at the pub now.

What else is Short’s releasing soon?

Along with more ControversiALE, we will also release Anniversary Ale and the Curl. As spring leads into summer, Nicie Spicie (our summer wheat) will return as the Seasonal, and we’ll also bring you more speciality releases including Kolsch 45 (first time bottle release), Spruce Pilsner, Strawberry Short’s Cake, Beach Wheat, and more. In the meantime, we are adding more tanks to our Elk Rapids brewery so that we can bring even more beer to the people of Michigan. When people from other states ask us why we distribute only within Michigan, we explain that it allows us to bring more varieties of beer to the Michigan craft beer consumer. So to the people of Michigan, thank you for supporting the variety of beers that we produce. Cheers to springtime!

Short’s to Short’s Update

We’ve been amazed by how many registrations we’ve already received for this year’s Short’s to Short’s Paddle, which will be held on Friday, April 27th. This year’s event is sure to be larger than ever! Michigan-based mountaineering and outdoor outfitter, Moosejaw, announced this week that they will be a sponsor of this year’s Paddle, and are giving away free, custom arcteryx t-shirts to the first 300 paddlers to arrive at our Elk Rapids post-paddle party at Short’s Production Brewery. Moosejaw is also giving away some great prizes to event participants. Participants will also receive a commemorative beer mug, which will be handy because we’ll have a bunch of great brews on tap. A special beer garden area will be set up under a tent outside of our Elk Rapids Production Brewery and it will be open from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on the 27th, with plenty of amazing beers on tap, great prize give-aways, food vendors, music, brewery tours, and more. We’ll have tents set up and plan to go forward with the post-Paddle reception no matter what the weather throws at us!

The 2012 Short’s to Short’s Paddle will introduce new check-in points at Torch Lake, Alden, Torch River, Elk Lake narrows area, and a new take-out location in Elk Rapids (sadly, the Riverwalk Grill burned down in October). Each paddler will be given a participant ID number that will allow us to quickly check you in as either “moving on” or else “dropping out.” Checking in at these points and letting us know if you are dropping out will entitle you to receive your free t-shirt and pint glass at the end of the day! We’ll also have more safety boats on the course than ever before, and will ask that paddlers stay within the designated course (more info on that later) to remain a part of the event. In years past, when people have cut straight across Torch Lake, we haven’t been able to keep as close of an eye on everyone as we would like. This year, we’ll ask all paddlers to stay inside of a line of stationary safety boats and buoys.

Green Planet Extreme Adventure Tours will again provide transportation and ground support services for the Short’s to Short’s paddlers. Kevin operates independently of our event, but has been extremely helpful to our paddlers in years past.  You can sign up for transportation
and/or kayak rentals through Green Planet’s website, here:
http://www.greenplanetextreme.com/shorts-to-shorts-paddle.html.  If you have questions, He can be reached at greenplanetextreme@gmail.com.

Anniversary Party, Aww Jeah!

We have also received tremendous interest in this year’s Anniversary Party, which is on Saturday the 28th of April, especially after the announcement last week via Facebook that we will be releasing the first ever bottle conditioned double Huma Lupa Licious, called Aww Jeah. Aww Jeah is a commemorative 1,000th production batch of Huma and will be available for sale only at our Pub, starting on the day of the Anni Party. Supplies are extremely limited (around 300 cases). More information about this release will be forthcoming, but Anniversary Party attendees will be able to experience AwwJeah from a firkin, as well as a separate side-project made with the final runnings of the Aww Jeah, which were then heavily hopped and lagered. That version is called Mmkay.

2012 – As food and drink enthusiasts descend up the nation’s capital on June 8 and 9, Short’s Brewing Company will be among the 74 small and independent craft brewers participating at SAVOR: An American Craft Beer & Food Experience in Washington, D.C.

Presented by the Brewers Association, SAVOR is the premier beer and food pairing event in the U.S. In its fifth year running, SAVOR provides guests the chance to sample craft beers from eight geographic regions across the country. To complement the craft beers, attendees will enjoy a reception-style sampling of delicious sweet and savory appetizers from a menu designed by Brewers Association culinary consultant Adam Dulye, Chef/Owner of The Monk’s Kettle and The Abbot’s Cellar in San Francisco, and a select group of chefs specializing in beer and food pairings.
